Why you should pay your Photographer
This seems like common sense right? I mean. You're requesting a service, you're expecting professionalism, you want quality and you want it ON TIME but when it's time to pay for your investment...you're hesitate. SMH you mam..you sir...are the WORST!
Over the years I've been shooting, since 2008, seriously since 2012, I've done tons of work and worked with tens of models. By far the worst client isn't the model who doesn't pay. It's the model who books you and never offers to pay. Does your Photographer own a camera bag? More than likely, their bag is holding hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, worth of equipment. But you, don't care. You want your photos and you don't want too, nor care to pay. Well I'm here, or you've been directed here because you have a hard time understanding why you need to PAY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER.
WHY SHOULD YOU PAY
...because Photographers have bills, but that's not why you're charged. You're charged for our time.
Tomorrow you're going to go to work. On a scale of 1-10, if you produce a 1 or a 10, if you put in 8 hours, you're getting paid for those 8 hours. How long you keep that job may be based on performance, but you understand my angle. So lets take a my upcoming Lifestyle session. We shoot for an hour. Once I get home I upload your images. I go thru your images, make selections and do some standard light edits. So out of the 300 pictures we've taken I lightly edit about 50 of them. Another Hour. After that, I probably select about 15 to do deep edits. What you call Photoshop. lol That takes about 15-20 mins per image. DO THE MATH. 5+ Hours later...Well I think you understand why you're charged.
...because Exposure does NEXT to NOTHING!
Have you ever been at work and want to slap that coworker who says "I love recognition even more than money" because all you've been wanting for months is a raise? Yeah, well your photographer wants to slap you when you try to brush off paying because "Oh I'm going to promote you and share your work". Let's be honest, your followers love seeing you flourish. They don't know, nor care, about who took the picture. Okay let's assume you get 100 likes, 10% may click on my account. How many will follow me? Better question, how many will BOOK ME? Yea I think you understand why you're charged.
...because there's a difference in quality between Free Product, Discounted Product & PAID WORK!
When you contact your photographer, he or she, have a base price or a price they would charge any and everyone. Depending on the relationship you may share, you may find yourself receiving a discount! Every photographer offers a discount, they are lying if they say otherwise. Let their mama book a shoot and compare receipts. Should you ever expect a discount? Dumb question. If you EXPECT it, you don't deserve it. Trust me when I say, there is a difference in quality if the session is paid, discounted or free. Your sister comes by and after discussion, she's leaving with your TV. She has particular "rights" if the TV was free, given at a discounted price or she paid for it. RIGHT? Yea I think you understand why you're charged.
KEY TIPS ON BOOKING YOUR SESSION
- Be on Time. Trust me, it makes a difference. Attitude, session length and professionalism is at risk.
- Gather as much information you need. Communication is key. Make it work
- Don't offer substitutes. I've been offered dinner, drinks, etc. Trust me your photographer will purchase all of that with their fee.
- Have questions? Concerns? ASK!! Your photographer wants to WOW you. Part of achieving that goal is understanding you!
- Pay and consider a Tip. Only time a tip is necessary is when you've been given a discount and you know it Tipping may even ensure your photographer going beyond and producing your work early!
