Inspired by Mama Jackie.
Before I start I want to thank two people. One, Mike, someone who I truly look up to but I don't give enough credit too (He reminds me, if my dad had a younger brother), and I want to thank Corinna. First off Mike, Ez The GOAT brother, has a opinion on everything and he's willing to share and offer a solution and/or guidance on anything. He doesn't judge but will tell you "that shit is stupid" very fast. His willingness to share and enlighten me on things I deem "not a big deal" is amazing. Next I want to thank Corinna, because when I'm in one of my moods and I feel like ranting, she listens, lets me finish, she may ask a couple of questions and tells me "it's gonna be okay baby".
Time to offset White Privilege
For the past few days I kept coming across a video entitled: "White Privilege explained in 5 minutes". And for the past couple of days, I kept on scrolling, due to the fact I knew what White Privilege was in middle school. Before we go there, it wasn't taught to me nor was it forced fed to me. I just noticed it and then a decade later, it had a name lol. But today someone important to me, Mama Jackie, shared the video and offered a compelling response: Wow! Sad truth! Remedy?? ...next generation??.
As a BLACK CHRISTIAN man, living in a forever change SOUTH, I'm honestly tired of two things. [Truthfully it's a lot more]. Im tired of denial of racial injustice & I'm tired of the lack of solutions.
What I loved most about Mama Jackie post, was her willingness to hear and want answers. As a society we can sit around all we want and point out issues, but who's willing to sit down and offer solutions? Take a listen to the video if you desire, and let me start!!
"So how do we 'offset' white privilege?"
Support minority owned businesses, especially small business owners.
Every time you get paid, after you take out your 10% and give it to the Lord (AMEN), invest back into a BLACK OR MINORITY owned business. Truthfully this isn't as hard as many make it seem, and if it appears hard, then well you see why this post is necessary. Follow these steps:
- Write down your expenses
- Eliminate expenses that must be with big businesses. (Electricity, Water, Rent/Mortgage etc)
- With the remaining expenses, food, health & beauty items, clothing, etc buy from a Black owned business and support.
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to share with my Snapchat this logic. To my surprise, the only response I received were from my non-ethnic followers. Lets not get it twisted. My brothers and sisters "get it", so that could clearly be why they didn't respond. But of my white followers that responded, I received nothing but positive and encouraging feedback. A couple of thumbs up and one girl shared a minority owned business she frequently shops!!.
So what's next?
When the opportunity arise, nominate someone of color!
Look around in your office and be truthful with yourself. How diverse is your "team"? Look at your organization and those in a position of power. How diverse is your/that team? Look beyond race, look at GENDER and even age. Notice anything? In the past year when you have recommended businesses, services and individuals, how many of those brands where BLACK owned? That's a not a white issue either, that's a EVERYBODY issue, blacks are guilty too!
Maybe your job isn't exactly hiring but needs marketing services or a location to host an event. Maybe there need a graphic designer, or what to host a team building exercise. Maybe they would like a caterer or need shirts printed....who would you suggest before heading to Google.
Plain and simple, when the opportunity presents itself, be ready!
